This blog is about gmail-lite, gmail-mobile, and other Gmail-related web application projects

gmail-lite

Introduction

gmail-lite is an HTML-only interface of Gmail. It makes use of libgmailer and removes all those Ajax fancy stuffs to provide a clean, neat interface to users. It originally targets browsers on PDA (such as Netfront), but its simplicity should allow it to work on any browser on Earth, from lynx to IE3 to firefox.

Other uses of gmail-lite

There are reports from visual impaired persons that gmail-lite works or works better in their text-to-speech browser than the standard Gmail. In addition, some reported that they used gmail-lite as a kind of proxy server, which allows them to check Gmail even though the country they are living or company they are working for had blocked Gmail, for whatever reason.

Other methods accessing Gmail

Since March 2005, Gmail has provided its own basic HTML-only interface for older browsers. But its functions are limited when compared with its standard interface. Moreover, it basically has the same layout as the stardard interface, which is not screen-efficient and bandwidth-efficient to PDA or mobile phone.

In addition, starting from December 2005, Gmail has its own version of Gmail Mobile: an XHTML interface dedicated to Internet-enabled mobile phones. It is the official mobile interface of checking Gmail, even though its functions are only a subset of gmail-lite and a much smaller subset of standard Gmail.

Google also started providing POP access to Gmail. However, POP can be used to read new mails only. It does not support other operations like labels and filters editing.

Therefore, at the meantime, gmail-lite (and gmail-mobile as well) still has its values :-D .
